Electrical discharge machining drill (GF 20)

The EDM drill passes current through a thin brass tube that arcs to the grounded workpiece. Flushing fluid allows the drill to evacuate burned material from the hole and create very deep, very small holes

Process Name

Drill EDM

Applications

Starter holes for wire EDM parts, high depth:diameter ratio holes, small holes in hard materials like carbide, removal of broken fasteners and taps

Advantages

Quick, simple setup, low cutting force allows holes to be drilled in delicate parts with minimal fixturing. Holes can be created at a much higher depth:diameter ratio than standard holemaking methods

Limitations

Dirty process, could contaminate a part intended for a cleanroom setting. Internal surface of the hole created is rougher than standard drilled hole

Specifications

Maximum depth: 10" Hole diameter range: .3mm - 5mm Materials: Conductive materials - steels, aluminum, carbide etc
